Its historic core was laid out in the colonial era, with streets radiating from State Circle and Church Circle down to City Dock. That plan is a large part of the city's charm, and it also means narrow streets, limited parking and real congestion when a big event is in town.

The Roads In: US-50/301, I-97 and MD-2

Three highways carry nearly all traffic into Annapolis.

US-50/301: the east-west freeway along the north side of the city. To the west it runs to the Capital Beltway and Washington. To the east it crosses the Severn River and continues over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore and the ocean beaches.

Reaching Downtown

From US-50, Rowe Boulevard is the main approach to the State House area, the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and downtown. West Street, Forest Drive and the Eastport bridge over Spa Creek handle local circulation. Near City Dock, the streets are narrow, some are one-way, and pedestrians are everywhere, so the last half mile can take longer than expected.

No Rail Service: What That Means

On an ordinary weekday this system works well. On a summer Saturday evening, or during any of the events below, garages can fill and the search for a space can use up the time you planned for dinner. Naval Academy Events

The Naval Academy shapes the city's calendar. Commissioning Week in late May brings the families of graduating midshipmen to town for several days of ceremonies, typically including a Blue Angels flight demonstration, and ends with graduation. Hotels fill well in advance, restaurant reservations become difficult and downtown traffic is heavy all week.

In the fall, Navy football home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Rowe Boulevard bring large crowds and tailgating, with slow traffic on Rowe Boulevard, Taylor Avenue and the US-50 ramps before kickoff and after the final whistle. The stadium also hosts lacrosse and other events through the year.

Access to the Academy grounds, known as the Yard, is controlled. Reagan National is reached by US-50 west into the District and then across the Potomac, or around the Capital Beltway.
