Ocean City Senior Week: A Parent's Guide to Getting Graduates There and Back Safely
For generations of Maryland high school graduates, Senior Week in Ocean City is a rite of passage: a week at the beach with friends in the days after graduation. For parents, it's a mix of pride and worry. The beach part is often easier to accept than the drive, which for most families means three hours or more each way on US 50 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, sometimes with a newly licensed driver behind the wheel and a carload of friends.
This guide is written for parents. It covers how to time the trip, how families can share transportation, what to discuss with your graduate about the week, and how a professional chauffeur can take the drive off the list of worries. It doesn't replace the conversations you'll have at home, but it can make one part of the week a lot simpler.
When Senior Week Happens
Senior Week isn't a single official event. It's a tradition that spreads across late May and June as Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and other high schools hold graduations on different dates. Many groups head to the beach the weekend after their ceremony, so Ocean City sees successive waves of graduates through June. Ask your teen's group early which week they're planning, because rentals and transportation both need to be booked in advance.
The Drive: Route 50 and the Bay Bridge
From Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington or the Maryland suburbs, the route to Ocean City almost always uses US 50 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and through the Eastern Shore. Summer weekend traffic is the main variable: eastbound backups toward the bridge are common on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and westbound traffic on Sundays can stretch for miles. The bridge toll is collected eastbound only.
Our guide to Bay Bridge traffic patterns explains the timing in more detail, but the short version is that leaving early in the morning or traveling mid-week makes a real difference. A Saturday-morning departure at 5 a.m. and one at 10 a.m. can feel like two different trips.
Why It Matters Who's Driving
The drive to Ocean City is long, and the drive home is often worse. By the end of the week, graduates are tired from late nights, sun and excitement, and the trip back across the Eastern Shore and the Bay Bridge is a long stretch of highway to cover when you're running on little sleep. New drivers are also less experienced with heavy traffic, bridge driving and a car full of friends competing for their attention.
That's not a criticism of teenagers; it's the same reason adults shouldn't drive tired after a long trip. Taking the driving off the table, at least for the trip home, removes one of the biggest risks of the week.
Sharing a Vehicle Between Families
Senior Week groups are often six to twelve friends staying together. Instead of several cars with several teen drivers, families can book a single vehicle and split the cost among themselves. A Mercedes Sprinter carries up to 13 passengers, so it can carry a whole group in one trip, with everyone arriving and leaving together. For a smaller group of four or five, a Chevrolet Suburban or Lincoln Navigator works well.
Luggage is the one thing to plan carefully. A week at the beach means suitcases, coolers, beach chairs and bags of groceries. Tell us how many people and how many bags you expect, and we'll recommend a vehicle class with enough room. A full Sprinter of 13 passengers with a week's worth of luggage each can be a tight fit, so larger groups may want two vehicles or fewer passengers per van.
Planning Drop-Off and Pickup Times
Remember the cancellation terms when you're coordinating multiple families: Sprinter vans and special-event bookings can be cancelled free up to 12 hours before pickup, while sedans and SUVs can be cancelled free up to 3 hours before.
- Check the rental's check-in and check-out times before booking transportation; many weekly beach rentals turn over on weekends.
- Book the return trip at the same time as the trip down, so it's confirmed before the week begins.
- Choose a single pickup point at home, such as one family's driveway, and a single address in Ocean City.
- Give us one parent as the main contact and the graduates' mobile numbers as passenger contacts.
- Leave a buffer on the return: everyone needs to be packed, out of the rental and at the curb on time.
What the Chauffeur Will and Won't Allow
Parents often ask how a chauffeur handles a vehicle full of excited graduates. Our policy is clear: alcohol is permitted only where lawful and only for passengers of legal drinking age, and illegal substances are strictly prohibited. For a vehicle of under-21 graduates, that means no alcohol in the vehicle at all. Chauffeurs focus on driving safely and getting everyone to the right address, and they'll contact the parent on the reservation if there's a problem.
It's worth telling your graduate about these rules before the trip, so there are no surprises on pickup day.
If Your Graduate Is Driving Anyway
Not every family will book a chauffeur for both legs, and some graduates will want their own car at the beach. If that's the plan, a few ground rules help: drive down early in the day rather than after a graduation party, avoid driving home on the last morning after a late final night, share the driving if there's another licensed driver, and keep passengers to the number your state's provisional license rules allow for newer drivers. Maryland's provisional license has passenger restrictions for drivers under 18, so check the Motor Vehicle Administration's current rules.
A common compromise is to let the group drive down and book a chauffeured ride home, when everyone is most tired and the Sunday westbound traffic is at its worst.
Conversations Worth Having Before the Week
Transportation is just one part of the week. Many parents also talk through the rental agreement, since many Ocean City rentals have age requirements, occupancy limits and noise rules; local laws, including Ocean City's rules on alcohol on the beach and Boardwalk; how the group will get around town, since Ocean City's municipal bus runs along Coastal Highway; and a check-in plan so you hear from your graduate regularly. The Town of Ocean City publishes current rules and visitor information on its website.
Maryland's laws on underage drinking also apply to adults who provide alcohol to minors or allow underage drinking in a residence or rental they control, which is worth knowing if a parent is renting the property.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Senior Week in Ocean City?
There's no single official date. Senior Week spans late May and June as different high schools hold graduations, and many groups head to Ocean City the weekend after their ceremony.
How long is the drive from Baltimore or DC to Ocean City?
Usually around three hours or more via US 50 and the Bay Bridge, and summer weekend traffic near the bridge can add significantly to that. Early-morning or mid-week travel tends to be faster.
Can several families share one vehicle for Senior Week?
Yes. A Mercedes Sprinter seats up to 13 passengers, so a whole group can travel together. Because a week's luggage takes up space, tell us the bag count so we can recommend the right vehicle or a second one.
Is alcohol allowed in the vehicle for graduates?
Alcohol is permitted only where lawful and only for passengers of legal drinking age. For graduates under 21, that means no alcohol in the vehicle, and illegal substances are strictly prohibited for everyone.
Should I book the return trip at the same time?
Yes. Booking both legs together guarantees the ride home is confirmed before the week begins, and you can plan the pickup around the rental's check-out time.
